Java Jolt: Coffee in JXN
“Coffee weather?” In my office (and house), anytime is coffee time, cold-brewed and iced, equally welcomed alongside a hot Americana or fresh-brewed cup o’ joe.
Here is a look at City With Soul spots to grab your favorite variety.

Cups - Fondren and LeFleur East (The Quarter)
A Fondren favorite, Cups flagship shop is located next to Fondren Public and is home to everyone’s favorite specialty drink: the blondie latte. Caramel and white Ghirardelli chocolate combined with espresso and milk, the blondie is served hot or frozen and has been a favorite of Cups lovers since day one.
Other menu items include the Capitol Street latte, which is caramel combined with espresso and milk, the brunette latte, iced coffee, café au lait, several espresso options, and loose-leaf tea options. Cups also makes another great study spot for local college students. The quaint environment is perfect for studying for finals or just hanging out with a few friends after a long day.

The Bean - Fondren
The newest kid on the block (by ownership, not existence), The Bean was once known as Sneaky Beans when former owner Byron Knight was around. In early 2020, he sold to Kristy Buchanan and Nikkole Inman, who reopened in early June of the same year.
The duo, who call JXN their adopted home, is committed to the community feel Knight offered (most of the staff stayed on) and to the quality beverages he used to serve.
The Bean offers the usual slate of drinks – still made with locally-roasted Bean Fruit Coffee and drip coffee by Hattiesburg-based Grin – as well as draft beer and wine. Daily breakfast, lunch and evening small plates and desserts are all on the menu, too, as well as comfortable places to gather within the shop and outside on the porch, especially when the shop hosts live music. Their walk-up window is convenient, too.

Native Coffee Company - Belhaven
Housed in the former Deep South Pops location in Belhaven, Native Coffee Co., owned by Anna and Matt Flinn, “exists to bring quality coffee to the quality people of Jackson, MS.”
Opened in April 2020 with curbside pickup – despite COVID-19 – the shop’s doors officially opened to welcome customers inside in early June of the same year.
The shop serves North Carolina’s Black & White Coffee Roasters products and food like biscuits, cinnamon rolls, muffins and, we are told, THE best chocolate chip cookies.

Green Bean Coffee - Downtown
Cold-pressed juices, pour-over coffee, tea and house-baked pastries make Green Bean a fresh, healthy way to treat yourself as one of the city’s favorite (and only) Black-owned cafés.
While coffee is a star, by far, the most popular items at Green Bean are the organic cold-pressed juices. The menu features several different fruit, vegetable and herb blends made with numerous purposes in mind, from “reboot” to “cleanse,” to “renew,” a bottle of Green Bean juice works its magic to get you back to where you want to be. Or, if you are looking for a new spot for a light lunch or breakfast on the go, Green Bean also features homemade soups and baked goods. The menu offers items such as the orange, anise and olive oil muffin, spinach and cheese croissants, blueberry financier and soup du jour.

PJ's - Fondren
PJ’s is locally owned by Jacksonians Anne and Jack Stanton, a franchised location of PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans, founded in 1978 by Phyllis Jordan.
The shop, in the former Trustmark Bank Building across from Fondren FroYo, serves a complete line of espresso-based beverages, flavored coffee, and award-winning Original Cold Brew™ iced coffee, as well as a variety of food options like fresh-baked pastries & desserts.
A benefit to many, PJ’s offers a drive-through window, a secluded back patio and contactless ordering via their website.

Coffee Prose - Midtown and LeFleur East (Highland Village)
Opened in 2019 in Jackson’s Midtown neighborhood, Coffee Prose is part coffee shop, part used bookstore and, more recently, part pop shop (taking over recipes from the former Deep South Pops).
Hosting local gatherings, study space for students and local art shows and fundraisers, Coffee Prose’s primary focus is on creating a gathering space that will further strengthen the bond between Midtown and its Jackson neighbors.
Specialty lattes with literary inspiration – Moby Dick, My Dog Sip and The Gatsby among them – are served alongside locally pre-prepared baked goods and entrees.
Coffee Prose has an additional location in Highland Village (center courtyard).

Urban Foxes - Belhaven Heights
Urban Foxes will tell you they are first a pie and pastry shop (and a fine one, at that).
Former Cups Cafe Fondren manager Cody Cox and wife/business partner Molly West renovated an old home on a mixed-use street, complete with a welcoming front porch and cozy backyard where local musicians and DJs offer intimate shows.
Back inside, Urban Foxes offers a precision-crafted caffeine fix, too, with drip-brewed coffee, pour overs and other specialty drinks. The shop serves Thunderhead Cold Brew by the bottle and local craft and domestic beers, as well.
