Overview

River Road and Other Mystery Stories is a collection of seventeen crime tales, some from the pages of Strand Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Black Cat Weekly, and Black Cat Mystery Magazine, and others written new for this book. Each story contains at least one mystery, though many contain several, and the characters you’ll find here range from private eyes to bank robbers to government agents to kidnappers to moonshiners to house burglars. Most of the stories are fair-play mysteries set in the present-day South; others will take you from the Old West of the 1880s to the mountains of Depression-era Kentucky. All were fun to write and will be—I hope—fun to read.

John M. Floyd’s short stories have appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Best American Mystery Stories, Best Mystery Stories of the Year, and many other publications. A former Air Force captain and IBM systems engineer, John is also an Edgar Award winner, a Shamus Award winner, a six-time Derringer Award winner, and a recipient of the Short Mystery Fiction Society’s lifetime achievement award.
