History Is Lunch: Sherita Johnson, Cheryl Jenkins, Rebecca Tuuri, and Michael Morris, “The Clyde Kennard Case and Higher Education”

October 21, 2026 @ 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Overview

At noon on Wednesday, October 21, a panel will discuss the case of Clyde Kennard, a Black veteran of the Korean War who made multiple unsuccessful attempts during the 1950s to enroll at the then-all White Mississippi Southern College, now the University of Southern Mississippi. Michael Morris, director of the Two Mississippi Museums, will moderate a panel featuring the authors of Mixing: Race, Higher Education, and the Case of Clyde Kennard: Sherita Johnson, associate professor of English at Pennsylvania State University; Cheryl Jenkins, associate professor in the School of Humanities and Fine Arts at Talladega College; and Rebecca Tuuri, associate professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi, as part of the History Is Lunch series. Mixing focuses on the struggle for racial equality in education and Kennard’s efforts to desegregate higher education. This free event will take place in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Two Mississippi Museums and will stream live on the MDAH Facebook page and YouTube channel. Copies of Mixing will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow.
