Overview
Join us for a screening of A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks, a 2021 documentary film that explores the enduring influence of legendary Black photographer Gordon Parks. Titled after his 1967 autobiography, the film chronicles Parks’ career, from his tenure as Life magazine’s first Black staff photographer to establishing the blaxploitation genre with his hit 1971 film Shaft.
Including interviews with exhibition co-curator Philip Brookman and artists represented in Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955-1985, this screening will mark the exhibition’s final week at MMA.
Following the film, exhibition artists Roy Lewis and John Clark Mayden will reflect on Parks’ legacy and forging their own photographic paths in a conversation moderated by Jackson State University photography professor Mark Geil.
This event is free and open to the public.
