West Jackson Strong: Steamer’s
Steamer’s recently celebrated its two-year anniversary in the West Jackson community and they’ve been a thriving part of the business community in Westland Plaza ever since they opened their doors.
With an expansive menu to include pasta, chicken wing platters and more, Steamer’s has successfully provided something for everyone under one roof.
I appreciate the convenience of drive-thru ordering and their daily lunch specials, which include your choice of steamed shrimp or Alaskan crab and two sides. Sides include corn on the cob, baby potatoes, baby cabbage or sweet potato fries. By baby cabbage, they mean brussels sprouts – and oh boy are they good. Their steaming seasoning choices vary from zesty to savory to spicy, or a combination of all three.
One of my favorite sides that could easily be a lunch entrée is the seafood potato. The jumbo fried shrimp are a treat as well. But, on this day in particular, I needed to pick up something more filling with more portions for sharing with my husband over dinner.
I chose the crab dinner pack which includes loads of steamed broccoli, potatoes, a 4-5 inch cut of sausage and two claws of seasoned crab legs. The sausage left much to be desired, which could be a matter of preference for a girl raised on Country Pleasin’ and house-made sausage. But the rest of the dinner was a hit. The potatoes were cooked just right and the broccoli still had firmness. Both were seasoned and had good flavor. The crab legs cracked perfectly and were seasoned with a combination of garlic, lemon pepper, and a dash of Cajun spice.
The price point was reasonable for something to be shared between two people, which made for a simple seafood meal at roughly $10 per person. Everything is steamed to order, so the wait times can vary depending on your order. If you have a larger order I would recommend going inside as opposed to the drive-thru.
I think Steamer’s Shrimp and Crab Market has found a niche in West Jackson, offering seafood meal options at affordable prices and with the convenience of drive-thru for a busy corridor in the heart of the west side.
If you are in the area, stop by and pay them a visit at 2530 Robinson Road in Jackson, MS. Take your non-seafood-fancy friends, too. They’ve got options for them as well!
