Museum Trail 'Capitol Connector' Breaks Downtown Ground

Ground has been broken on the Capitol Green Connector, extending the Museum Trail directly into downtown.

This expansion will link museums, neighborhoods, landmarks, and civic spaces through a new green corridor connecting our city's cultural heart.

The groundbreaking ceremony celebrated the generous investments and partnerships that made this milestone possible, along with the shared vision of a more connected and revitalized downtown via The Museum Trail.

Reconnecting Downtown Jackson

The project is supported by the Federal Highway Administration's Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Planning Grant, which funds infrastructure that repairs historic barriers to mobility and opportunity. The Capitol Green Connector will bridge gaps in our pedestrian network, making downtown destinations accessible to everyone.

The expansion connects the existing 2.5-mile Museum Trail to major downtown destinations, including the Old Capitol Museum, Two Mississippi Museums, the historic GM&O Depot, and Hal & Mal's. Future phases will extend to the Mississippi Museum of Art in the Arts District, then continue to the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, honoring the Museum Trail name by linking even more of Jackson's premier cultural institutions.

Building on Success

The Museum Trail already connects the Mississippi Farmers Market to the Mississippi Children's Museum, providing access to LeFleur's Bluff State Park, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, and the Two Mississippi Museums. The trail features Mississippi's longest mural and connects three parks along Jackson's first rail trail.

This expansion builds on that foundation, creating a connected network that supports pedestrian infrastructure, community health, and economic revitalization in downtown.

Partnership Makes It Possible

The Jackson Heart Foundation serves as project lead, with support from key sponsors: Entergy Mississippi, the Community Foundation for Mississippi, the Capital City Improvement District, Great City Mississippi Foundation, the City of Jackson, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Mississippi Department of Archives & History (MDAH), the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC), and the Department of Finance & Administration (DFA).

This groundbreaking represents a transformative investment in Jackson's commitment to pedestrian infrastructure, community health, and economic revitalization in the city's core.
