Blue Monday at Hal & Mal's: Jackson's Blues Jam Where Anyone Can Take the Stage
On Monday nights at Hal & Mal's, a sign-up sheet by the door is the only thing standing between you and a blues stage — and people like Bobby Rush have used it.
Blue Monday, hosted by the Central Mississippi Blues Society for nearly 20 years, is where Jackson's blues scene shows up, plays together, and keeps something alive.
There's a sign-up sheet by the door at Hal & Mal's on Monday nights. It doesn't ask for credentials. It doesn't ask how long you've been playing. It just asks if you want to get on stage — and people do. Big names and first-timers, lifelong regulars and visitors passing through Jackson who didn't plan to end up on a blues stage but somehow did. Multi-Grammy winner Bobby Rush has signed it. So have a lot of people you've never heard of who can absolutely play.
That's Blue Monday. And it's been going on for nearly 20 years.
What Happens on a Blue Monday Night
The Blue Monday band takes the stage at 8:30 p.m., a rotating roster of musicians who are also members of the Central Mississippi Blues Society (CMBS), the organization that has called Hal & Mal's home for nearly 20 years.
From there, the room takes over. Anyone who signed the sheet gets a turn — to sing, to sit in with the band, to bring whatever they've got. The result is a set that no one, including the musicians, can fully predict.
The Organization Behind the Night
CMBS was formed in 2006 by blues enthusiasts and musicians with a straightforward mission: keep the blues alive in Central Mississippi. Blue Monday is the most visible expression of that mission, but not the only one.
Through programs like Blues in the Schools, CMBS has worked directly with students — partnering with Hardy Middle School to teach harmonica, and at the end of the year, letting students keep the instruments. Guitars have been restored and restrung for kids learning basic skills. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization helped blues musicians supplement income lost to canceled shows.
To support the organization's long-term future, CMBS — now led by president Keith Collins — recently established an endowment fund at the Community Foundation for Mississippi, a sign that the people behind Blue Monday are thinking well past any single Monday night.
A Room the Blues World Has Noticed
Hal & Mal's has been booking blues artists for more than 30 years. Albert King, B.B. King, Koko Taylor, Little Milton, Mose Allison, James Brown, Johnny Winter, R.L. Burnside, Bobby Rush. The list reads like a syllabus.
In 2020, The Blues Foundation recognized that history with a Keeping the Blues Alive Award, one of only nine given globally that year. Founding CMBS member Peggy Brown has described it as the blues equivalent of a Grammy or Oscar. CMBS nominated Hal & Mal's for the award.
The world noticed what people in Jackson already knew: that the room on Commerce Street on Monday nights is one of the real ones.
Blue Monday runs every Monday at Hal & Mal's, with the Blue Monday band taking the stage at 8:30 p.m. The sign-up sheet is by the door.
