April 22, 2021

The 2021 Cricket Wireless Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Football Championship will be played in Jackson on May 1.

The game between Arkansas Pine Bluff and Alabama A & M University, was initially scheduled to be played on the campus of the highest ranked team at the conclusion of regular season play.

“We’ve made the decision to relocate the upcoming SWAC Championship game to a neutral site location due to the COVID-19 related game cancelations that directly impacted (both teams),” said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland.

Visit Jackson and the City of Jackson celebrates the news of the move.

“We welcome the players, coaches and fans of Alabama A&M University and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to the City With Soul,” said Rickey Thigpen, Visit Jackson President and CEO.

Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said, “The City of Jackson is thrilled to serve as host for the SWAC Championship game and grateful for the opportunity to present Jackson to all of our visitors and friends.”

Thigpen said it is through collective ambition and working partnerships, the staff of Visit Jackson, and the mayor’s office diligently working to secure such a large-scale event.

“The City of Jackson and the surrounding metro areas will see a significant increase in visitors and, as a result, revenue,” Thigpen added. “I can not think of a better time for this event and its welcomed boost to the city’s economy.”

The championship game is scheduled to be played on Saturday, May 1 at 2:00 pm CST and will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and available live and on demand on the WatchESPN App.
