A Conversation With Bluesman Bobby Rush

Since the early 1980s, bluesman Bobby Rush has been a proud Jacksonian, known internationally for his soulful and modern take on Southern blues. From his recordings at LaJam Records to his lively live shows, Bobby reinvents perceptions of his genre and hometown.

“Where we were, where we are, and where we should be—it’s just a matter of time because Mississippi is on the rise,” Bobby said. “If you’re out there thinking Mississippi’s on the left side of the field, come down; we’ll show you. We eat well, we dance well, and we play the blues well. And we have fun.”

Born Emmett Ellis, Jr., in Homer, Louisiana, Bobby was influenced by his father's gospel singing. He became used to facing Mississippi naysayers while playing juke joints and champions Jackson for its diverse talent.

“I’m telling you now—Mississippi got something to offer,” Bobby said. “It’s a lesson you can learn... My motto is, ‘Do all I can while I can.’ When it comes a time I can’t, I won’t live with regrets.”

His latest album, “All My Love For You,” is nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album at the 66th Grammy Awards, marking his seventh nomination. With over 70 years of recording and 419 records, you’d think he’d be slowing down. You would be mistaken.
