Designing a New Life: How the McConnells Made Jackson Home
When a late-night Zillow search turned serious, Wells and Shem McConnell found themselves on an unexpected path to Jackson, Mississippi.
Now settled in a mid-century home in the city’s heart, they’re building community and calling the City With Soul their own.

For Wells Maley McConnell, Jackson, Mississippi, wasn’t on her radar as a place to call home. Originally from Atlanta and a graduate of the University of Georgia, she never imagined she would find such a strong sense of community in a city she had only briefly visited. But now, she and her husband, Shem, couldn’t be happier to have planted roots in the heart of Jackson.
Wells is the founder and designer of Swells, a line of hand-drawn silk scarves that merge modern trends and colors with timeless luxury. What began as a college project during COVID soon grew into a full-fledged business, refined through a post-graduate program at her alma mater. “I wanted to create something that could be as versatile as the people wearing it,” she explains. “You can style it in New York with a power suit, or wear it casually at home with denim shorts and a white t-shirt. It’s something that evolves with you.”
Her brand’s success, combined with her warm and engaging personality, has also opened an unexpected door—becoming a social media influencer. This role allows her the freedom to work remotely, travel as needed, and connect with an audience that appreciates both style and substance.
Shem McConnell, originally from Washington, had no prior ties to Mississippi before attending Mississippi College. However, his time there left a lasting impression. “Jackson just had this warmth—something about the people, the pace of life, the way the community welcomes you in,” he shares. His deep connection to Fondren Church during his time at MC also played a role, and the couple had their premarital counseling there with Pastor Daniel Wagner, who also married them.
By October 2024, the McConnells had officially made Jackson home, moving into a charming 1956 historic Fondren residence. Eager to breathe new life into the space while preserving its timeless character, they partnered with local designers Erik Kegler and Brennan Hovell of EK Home to create a look that blends classic elegance with modern updates—and, of course, pops of color.
While updating their new home has been a labor of love, integrating into Jackson’s community has felt effortless. “The way we’ve been welcomed—by neighbors, by new friends—it’s been incredible,” says Wells. “Everyone is so eager to say hello, invite us over, and build real friendships. It’s made this move feel like the best decision we could have made.”
Now, the McConnells find joy in hosting gatherings in their backyard and embracing the sense of belonging they never expected to find in Jackson. What started as a spontaneous real estate search has led them to a place that feels like home in every sense of the word.
