Hidden Gem Reimagined: Union Market Transforms Downtown Jackson

Tucked beneath the historic Mill Street Viaduct in downtown Jackson, a once-forgotten space is buzzing with new energy.

Union Market—an open-air community venue nestled beneath the train station and just steps from the King Edward—is quickly becoming one of the capital city's most exciting gathering spots.

Originally built in the 1920s when the train tracks were elevated, this atmospheric space once housed Jackson O'Hart, a putt-putt golf course. Over the decades, it shifted purposes, from rental car storage to a brief restaurant venture. Then, it sat quietly waiting after a 2007 $11M renovation—until now.

Magnolia Sunset Markets Finds a New Home

With help from the Jackson Redevelopment Authority (JRA) and creative partner Thabi Moyo of Magnolia Sunset Markets, the space has blossomed into a vibrant community hub. "JRA approached me to help activate the space," Moyo said. "So I'm essentially bringing Magnolia Sunset Markets' framework to Union Market. I like to say I'm the training wheels."

Monthly events now draw crowds for local vendors, music by DJ Java, food trucks, and family-friendly vibes. Thanks to the clever 1920s architectural design, the breezy venue stays surprisingly temperate, even in Mississippi's summer heat.

A New Community Heartbeat

"The vantage point is just beautiful," Moyo added. "It feels urban, alive. It's a vibe."

With summer markets continuing July 19 and August 23—and holiday events brewing—Union Market is cementing itself as Jackson's newest community cornerstone.
