Comprehensive Updates After 25 Years

The project, which began this week, includes a complete redesign of the gift shop and front lobby, updates to conference spaces and bathrooms, repairs to the building's skylight, and construction of new pavilions near the playground area. The museum's core exhibits, aquariums, and nature trails remain open during construction.

"The renovations officially kicked off two days ago or so," said TJ Drummond, the museum's visitor services manager. The gift shop will have a limited footprint for a time, and visitors can still access all exhibit areas and outdoor trails.

New Pavilions Enhance Outdoor Experience

The outdoor improvements include a large pavilion seating 100 people near the museum's former pool house and four smaller pavilions accommodating about 15 people each near the concession stand at LeFleur's Bluff playground.

The museum recently completed theater renovations, installing new seating, audiovisual equipment, paint, and carpet. That project wrapped up about a week ago, Drummond said.

Why Visit Mississippi's Premier Natural Science Destination?

For Drummond, the museum's appeal lies in its authentic representation of Mississippi's natural heritage. "I think you get a real slice of life of what Mississippi has to offer," he said. "Mississippi has some of the most numerous and expansive state parks in the country, and right here at the Museum of Natural Science, we have a great slice of life representing those state parks."

The museum features nature trails leading to Mayes Lake, along with indoor exhibits showcasing the state's wildlife and ecosystems.

"I personally never feel closer to Mississippi than when I walk through the museum, when I walk out on the trails, when I just take a breath of that fresh air and experience what natural Mississippi has to offer," Drummond said. "It's fun for the whole family. It's informative and it really shows you what our special state has to offer people."
