Rhythm of Home: John Hart Geary

John Hart Geary has taken a winding path, one that led from Jackson to Nashville and eventually brought him back home. It’s clear his creative roots were always here.

Growing up in Jackson, Geary balanced life in the classroom with training horses and competing in rodeos. A brief family move to Oxford and later a degree in English from Mississippi State gave him perspective.

From Nashville to Jackson: A Return to Roots

But music pulled him in a different direction. He taught and coached in Canton for a time, then followed that creative call to Chattanooga and eventually Nashville. There, he performed under his own name and toured the country.

His early sound leaned into hip hop. Today, it’s evolved into something he calls “indie country,” blending acoustic, folk, and indie rock influences. “Some songs lean folky and acoustic-driven, others drift into indie rock territory,” he says. “I don’t worry about genre. If it feels good, I make it.”

What hasn’t changed is the influence of Jackson. From gospel music in the pews to early hip hop on the radio, the city helped shape his musical sensibility. “Jackson has always struck me as an authentic place,” Geary says. “It’s not flashy or trying to be cool, but it’s full of grit, sincerity, and vulnerability, and that’s what I hope to convey in the music I make."

After years in the hustle of Music City, Geary stepped away in 2023. He spent time off-grid in Alabama before returning to Jackson for what he thought would be a short stay. The slower pace, familiar faces, and space to breathe changed his mind.

Now back in Jackson full-time, Geary is still making music. He’s also building something new. In April 2024, he launched Duke’s Pressure Wash and Home Service, a small business that has already grown into a five-person crew offering pressure washing, painting, fencing, and carpentry.

For Geary, Jackson offers something rare: space to work, time to reflect, and a community that feels real. “Jackson’s got potential,” he says. “And I want to be a part of it.”

Geary isn’t currently touring, but his music is available on Spotify and Apple Music. You can follow him on Instagram at @johnhart_music.
