HBCU Baseball Takes Center Stage at Trustmark Park This February
If you've never experienced HBCU baseball, this might be your moment. The HBCU Power Series is coming to Trustmark Park in Pearl February 12–15, and it's bringing something the metro has never quite seen before.
six powerhouse HBCU baseball programs, three days of back-to-back games, and an atmosphere built around school pride, tradition, and serious competition. This isn't just another baseball tournament. It's a celebration, one that happens to involve some exceptional collegiate athletes.
What Makes This Event Different
The Mississippi Mud Monsters were selected to host this multi-day showcase in partnership with Major League Baseball, which tells you something about the scale and significance of what's happening. Six schools—Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M, Alabama A&M, Grambling State, Jackson State, and Alcorn State—will converge on Central Mississippi for a weekend that blends high-level baseball with the pageantry, music, and energy that HBCU athletics are known for.
"This weekend is going to feel loud, joyful, and intentional," said Andrew Seymour, General Manager of the Mississippi Mud Monsters. "It's great baseball, incredible traditions, and an atmosphere that welcomes everyone through the gates."
The format is straightforward: three game slots per day (11 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 6 p.m.) across Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All games are nine innings with a 10-run rule, creating a true collegiate showcase environment. But before the first pitch on Friday, there's a full pre-event day on Thursday dedicated to team workouts, arrivals, and the kind of pageantry that sets the tone for everything that follows.
Two Mississippi Teams in the Mix
For local fans, this is also a chance to watch Jackson State and Alcorn State compete on their home turf against out-of-state programs. Both schools will play multiple games throughout the weekend, including a Sunday evening matchup against each other at 6 p.m., a rivalry game that could very well be the weekend's emotional peak.
Jackson State opens their weekend Friday at 6 p.m. against Prairie View A&M, then faces Alabama A&M on Saturday at 6 p.m. before closing out Sunday against Alcorn State.
Alcorn State kicks things off Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Grambling, plays Prairie View on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., and finishes the weekend with that evening game against Jackson State.
Accessible for Everyone
Here's what stands out: the Mud Monsters and their partners intentionally structured ticket pricing to make this accessible. Adults pay $10. Kids 14 and under pay $5. And students from any of the participating schools get in free with a valid student ID.
That pricing structure isn't an accident. It's designed to remove barriers and welcome as many people as possible through the gates: families, alumni, students, and anyone curious about what HBCU baseball culture looks like when it shows up in full force.

Why This Matters
Baseball has always had the ability to bring people together, but this event is designed with that intention from the start. It's competitive, yes, but it's also communal. The weekend will be filled with school colors, marching band traditions, shared moments between alumni and current students, and the kind of atmosphere that makes professional ballparks feel like gathering spaces rather than just venues.
