Fondren

The Fondren Historic District has been known as one of Jackson's cultural centers since the 1920s, with spaces to enjoy music, food, the arts, and everything in between.

Interestingly, the neighborhood was once home to the Mississippi Lunatic Asylum and known as ‘Sylum Heights. Annexed by the city in 1925, it's maintained its charm and character through to today. Diverse, accepting, and creative, the area is always buzzing with activities ranging from shows and art exhibits to group fitness opportunities, festivals like Fondren Live, book signings, and more.

If you're an out-of-town visitor, Homewood Suites by Hilton is located in the heart of Historic Fondren and features pet-friendly services, free parking, and an indoor pool. Start your morning with a cup of coffee from Cups, The Bean, Soulé or PJ’s Coffee House before hitting up shopping and sightseeing. If you need an extra side of bacon and eggs to get you started, look no further than historic Brent's Drugs, the neighborhood's original soda fountain and diner that's been serving the community since 1946.

Be certain to check out the concentration of public art here, too, from murals and sculpture to the yards of Fondren residents like Suzie Cranston.

Where to Drink and Dine in Fondren

With nearly two-dozen restaurants, bars, bakeries and coffee shops in a four-block area, there’s no question: Jackson’s Fondren neighborhood earns its reputation as the culinary jewel of Mississippi.

The Everyday Gardener, Hunt The Shop, and Interiors Market are just a few of many stops for unique home decor and vintage finds. Four-legged friends can find the best in pet care at The Pet Shop, where holistic food and treats exist alongside handcrafted leashes and bowls. Oxford, Mississippi's The End of All Music JXN opened its second location on North State Street in 2021, buying and selling new and used vinyl records, turntables, and more (make sure to grab a "browser beer" while perusing).

For a top-line, all-inclusive gym experience, including personal training and group fitness classes, check out Fondren Fitness to meet your health goals. Next door, Mama Nature’s Juice Bar is known for its refreshing, organic smoothie and juice options.

For the perfect outfit or shoe, pop into Treehouse Boutique, Swell-O-Phonic, Conkrete Kicks, or Mozingo Clothiers. Savor flavors and enjoy casual dining at Green Ghost Tacos, Rooster's, and The Pig & Pint or take your dinner up a notch at Saltine, Little Tokyo or Aladdin Mediterranean Grill. Top everything off with a nightcap at Fondren Public or The Apothecary, named one of "America's 50 Best Bars" by Esquire Magazine.

In nearby West Fondren Industrial Park, a burgeoning neighborhood, The Plant (once the Ecoshed) bills itself as an events venue. Check out the Habitat Restore while you're in that area if you have a home project on our horizon. And for fun, the extensive collection of classic and newer cars at The Vault is truly a hidden Jackson gem.

One of the newest and most exciting installments in Fondren is the reopening of the Capri Theatre, along with Highball Lanes - a restaurant with a bowling alley - and The Pearl Tiki Bar, all inspired by the mid-century modern flair of the 1960s.

Whether you're looking to catch a local concert at Duling Hall, art opening at Brown's Fine Art & Framing, a book signing at Lemuria, or food tastings at one of the many highly-touted restaurants like Walker's Drive-In, there's a little something for everyone to savor and experience.
