Mississippi's largest professional arts organization, the Mississippi Museum of Art, holds an extensive collection of more than 3,000 works including the world's largest collection by and relating to Mississippians and their culturally diverse heritage. The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience tells the story of the pioneering spirit of a people whose culture reflects their historical past from before the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. Exhibits include religious artifacts, a photographic journey reflecting the spirit of the rural South through Jewish eyes by world-renowned photographer Bill Arron, and an orientation video heralding the remarkable journey of Jews from the 19th century Europe to the South of today. As the first museum in the United States devoted to Islam and Muslims, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures seeks to educate the public about Mississippi's diverse cultural and religious heritage and to facilitate multicultural tolerance. In addition to a permanent collection of artifacts and documentary displays, the museum also organizes special exhibitions relating to the Muslim experience in history. The museum moves to an interim facility in the Mississippi Arts Center in late 2006 for the opening of its latest exhibition entitled The Legacy of Timbuktu: Wonders of the Written Word.
