As the first museum in the United States devoted to Islam and Muslims, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures seeks to educate the public about Mississippi's diverse cultural and religious heritage and to facilitate multicultural tolerance. In addition to a permanent collection of artifacts and documentary displays, the museum also organizes special exhibitions relating to the Muslim experience in history. The museum moves to an interim facility in the Mississippi Arts Center in late 2006 for the opening of its latest exhibition entitled The Legacy of Timbuktu: Wonders of the Written Word.
